Why the Law?

In Galatians 3:10, we are told that “All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.'” We also know that there is no one who has kept all the law except for Jesus. God’s Law seems to be a standard that no one can meet. Now, if the Bible tells us that sin is transgression of the law, and that the wages of sin is death, then what good is the law? Why did God give us the law if He knows we can meet His standards?

Let me first begin by telling you a little about the law of the Lord as revealed through His Word. Psalms 19:7 tells us that “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul…” So God’s standards are perfection. He expects us to be perfect. That verse also tells us that the law converts the soul. Keep this in mind.

Romans 3:19-20 says “Now we know that what things soever the law says, it says to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” These passages make the next two points of the law very clear.

First, it stops man from justifying himself. It tells us that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God. Second, it gives the knowledge of sin. It defines it. Paul said in Romans 7:7, “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law…”

So we have discovered that the purpose of the law is:

  1. To stop man from trying to justify himself.
  2. To define sin.

But perhaps the most important thing to understand about the purpose of the law is revealed to us in Galatians 3:24-25, “So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.” Eureka! That’s it! The main purpose of God’s holy law is to lead us to Christ! What a wonderful thing for our loving God to do. The law cannot cure our sin but it does lead us to Christ. Without the law, we would be arrogant, full of ourselves and unable to justify ourselves before God. Only by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ are we justified by His grace. Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live by faith.

So the law is not a bad thing at all, it is a sign of God’s mercy. I believe this will lead to another post sometime soon, but I will end this here.
